Phaidon’s ‘Vitamin’ series was already represented here in the Krieble collection by two volumes--VITAMIN D (drawing) & VITAMIN P (painting). This recent volume completes a trifecta, if you will, of this series’ fine showcases of work, germane to studies at Lyme Academy. The actual physical tome in question is a solid metallic-edged green BLOCK featuring 332 sculptors and environmental artists. Some of the work may come from an aesthetic you are comfortable with, but some will drive you out a distance and then let you figure out your own way back home. Which is a good thing.

Pyle not only exhibited great draftsmanship in *pyrateTUDE* but also was the founder of The Brandywine School (which inc. N.C. Wyeth etc.), hence being the veritable cornerstone of The Golden Age of Illustration here in the colonies. When ye sign on for a tour of duty here at The Academy, Old Skool *is* cool skool, me hearties-- AAARRRRR…

Personnel, Services & Hours -- Library Update

This semester we will be joined by two new student staff. Happily, Emily Bedard and Samantha Smith have been hired as our new Student Library Assistants. They will be covering the library's Saturday service hours and providing some assistance during the week.

We will start regular library services on Wednesday the 27th of August. It is the first day of our fall semester. The library will resume day and evening service hours starting on the 27th.

Full week service hours will start on September 2nd. Please note that the library will be closed on Saturday, August 30 and Monday, September 1.

Addition of Computer Workstation

Have you noticed that we have added another computer workstation in the back shelving area of the library?

Most of you know that the library has multiple Mac and PC workstations, right?

Please be aware that we have moved one of the G5 Macintosh workstations into the library stacks. This workstation was one of the Mac workstations that used to be in the reading room hub.

Currently, this station is set up to be used for Internet Access, online research, or word processing & presentation preparation.

As you walk into the library shelving area you'll find the new workstation at the end of the 700s (Art books) and by the start of the 800's (Literature books).

Just as the other reading room workstations, this workstation is available on a first come first serve basis... please remember to sign-in your use at the front desk.

As we are able, we hope to add more and continue to upgrade the computers that are accessible in the library.

I am enormously pleased to announce that Joe Shea has accepted the Art Library & Technology Assistant position recently vacated by Stephanie Johnson. Starting on Monday, November 5 he will join Shawn Robinson, Jerry Montoya and I to provide service at the Krieble Library. Joe will primarily be working to support our evening service hours.

Joseph has most recently been employed as a Production Assistant, where he archived, digitized, designed and performed layout duties. He holds both a Masters in Art Education & a Bachelors in Fine Arts (Painting). He has additional work experience as a teacher and graphic artist. Currently he is enrolled in the Library Technical Assistant (LTA) Certificate program at Three Rivers Community College. Joe's solid skills and background should fit extremely well to meet our campus and library service needs.

Please join me in making him welcome to our staff and campus community.

Our service hours will be restored to our full schedule starting on Monday November 5, 2007.

Computer Resources @ The Krieble Library

Our College's library currently serves at the "default" computer center for our campus.

Our public access workstations currently include several Dell PCs and two MacIntosh Power Mac G5 machines, plus several laptop computers. We're very please to announce that we will be adding a new MacIntosh iMac computer with the Intel Core 2 processor.

This growth in our computer resources was made possible with the generous support of the Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation. Look for this new workstation to be available the third week in October.

We are fortunate to receive the continued generous support of this foundation. Their aid in our college's technology growth greatly boost our ability to provide our academic community with the tools essential to access and use information resources; to produce quality academic achievements; and to facilitate meaningful connections with the outside world. Their support benefits all our library patrons immensely.

Columbus Day & Service Schedule for Week of October 8-14

There are some slight changes in the service schedule for next week. Here's the anticipated schedule for the Week of October 8-14, 2007 :

Mac G5 & Epson Scanner/Copier Set-up in Library

Due to the steady increase in demands for the production of digital files & color copies we have set up another shared access workstation to meet the need of patrons with quick, "last minute" or otherwise unscheduled production needs.

This station is located inside the library, directly outside of our Visual Resources Center (VRC). We encourage you to stop by and acquaint yourself with this workstation.

Our VRC station will continue to be available for those patrons that want to guarantee computer time with an advance reservation. The availability of both stations should help better meet the needs during peak demand.

This new set-up is available on a first come, first serve basis. LACFA students, faculty and staff are welcome to make use of this additional workstation without an appointment.

The station is set up with a G5 MacIntosh computer, Epson RX700 scanner and software for image editing and production of digital presentations.

Among its many functions, the Epson RX700 can produce high resolution scans up to 48-bit, 3200 x 6400. It is outfitted with a flat bed scan surface that is standard letter size, slots for media cards, and a special carrier to allow users to scan 35mm slides and negatives to turn them into digital files. In addition the unit provides users with six-color printing and copying.

The Mac G5 computer can produce a variety of types of image file to best suit your needs. The most popular types have been .pdf and .jpg files. Additionally Internet, Apple & Microsoft Office software are accessible on this workstation. As this is a shared workstation, all users will need to save their work to their own portable storage. The library sells CDs for those that wish to save their files to disc.

Just this week we have added a DLP projector to our to our campus AV equipment. Our new projector offers our campus users:

The support to purchase this new equipment came from the Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation. They are generous supporters of our continued growth. Now, we can provide projection in multiple rooms at the same time!

This is our second multi-media projector and there are future plans to install this projector with a ceiling mount in our academic center lecture hall.

The projector's 3000 Lumens provide for excellent illumination. The brightness and contrast ratio of this new projector will bring our campus' projection capabilities to a much improved level. Currently, this projector (and all other AV equipment) is avaiable for use only for on-campus use with advance reservations. Further details below:

Visual Resource Equipment Access & Policies

Our equipment is available to faculty, staff & students. The library provides lighting units for taking photos of student & faculty work, video cameras, VHS & DVD viewing equipment, multiple types of projectors (LCD, DLP, slide, overhead), laptops, and other slide viewing equipment, such as portable light boxes.

This library equipment is available for use by request at the library's main service desk. Registered students may use the lighting units, cameras, projectors, computers, slide & video viewing equipment and related facility resources on campus in rooms designated for equipment use.

Equipment needed for classroom or public presentations may be signed out by Faculty and Staff ONLY.

Krieble Library seeks self-starter with well-honed organizational skills for full-time(37.5 hrs/wk) library generalist position. Position is to support Librarian and co-workers in operations of the library & the visual resources center.

Ideal candidate will work well with both technology and people. Staff focus is on patron access & service areas. The abilities to balance multiple duties, and to work well independently & as part of multiple teams are essential to succeeding in this position. Additionally, knowledge or background in studio arts or art history is helpful.

Responsibilities & duties include: internal & external loan services, AV support, assisting patrons in the selection & use of library materials & computer resources, processing materials, collections & stack maintenance, assisting in supervising department facilities, student assistants, volunteers and interns and other related duties as assigned.

Work schedule changes to adjust to library hours during the semester and designated breaks. Library is currently open 8am – 9:30pm most weekdays and on Saturdays from 1-5pm. Semester work schedule for this position is primarily Monday – Thursday second shift (mid-day to close) and Friday full day shift(open to close). Announcing Joe Shea, Library Technology Intern

You may think there is a new face at the library or you may recognize Joe Shea [photo below] as he has volunteered at the Krieble Library in the recent past. We are very pleased to continue working with him for the fall 2007 semester.

This semester he will be working here on an internship. Joe comes to us from the Three Rivers Community College and will be working with us on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings starting this month on through December of this year. Joe is here to gain field experience by working with the regular library staff in our Library and Visual Resources Center. He will be on hand to assist students, faculty and all library patrons while he works through his supervised field placement course. He will be producing a formal report and blogging his experience as part of his semester's work. He is extemely enthusiastic about volunteering his time on our campus. A Fond Farewell To Stephanie Johnson

College IDs - Library Cards UPDATE

Friendly Reminder:
All current students & faculty should have college IDs. If you do not have an ID stop by the library to have your photo taken this month. We will be processing new IDs throughout the month of September.

For those returning to campus this semester with out-of-date IDs, update stickers are avaialble at the circulation desk in the library. Bring your ID to the library to have it updated for the new semster.

Your College ID doubles as your library card and it is essential for use of the library collections and databases. Please be sure to keep your ID current.

Staff have processed IDs for new students that had their photo's taken during Orientation. First year students may stop by the library's check-out desk to pick up their IDs.

Freshmen Seminar Library Basics
12 - 1 in Library

ALL incoming students with less than 30 transfer credits will be attending the Library 411 Freshman Seminar on the above listed date starting at noon.

Students required to take this seminar have been pre-registered. Any questions on this consult Patti Broedlin at x112 or the librarian at x132.

No advance preparation is required for this seminar. This seminar is assignment based.

Attendees should arrive on time for a 15 minute introduction. After 15 minutes each will be given an assignment sheet. Credit for this seminar is granted only upon completion of the assignment. The assignment covers basic foundation knowledge that LACFA faculty and the library have determined is essential to know about use of our college library.

The assignment is hands-on exploration of the library through search-discovery & use exercises. This hands-on mode of learning seems to be the most effective means of delivering the lesson objectives. The assignment is brief and should take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

The assignment due date is September 25^th-- one week after the seminar! Student Services will be informed of each student that earns credit for the seminar upon completion of the assignment.

Visual Resources Center Activities FY 2006-07

Demands for the use of digital images have grown sharply on our campus. These demands come with advances in digital technologies and our transitioning away from collecting and presenting images on 35mm film.

To this day, we still maintain a large collection of 35mm slides of art for presentations in the classroom. As digital images are becoming more readily available for use the 35mm film is becoming a less needed collection. On our campus, the overall use of the 35mm slide collection has been on a steady decline and we believe the collection will eventually fall into disuse.

Several times throughout the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 terms our Access Services Coordinator, Stephanie Johnson reported that, "…faculty members who wanted to learn how to create digital slide shows in lieu of using [35mm] slides & projectors,” were approaching her to learn the basics of using digital images on the computer and in the classroom.

At the Krieble Library, we have been taking strides towards making digital image resources available for teaching and learning on our campus for several years. Part of these efforts includes providing basic advisement and instruction on creating, selecting and using images. Each who endeavors to make use of these image resources needs to learn how to use digital cameras, computers, scanners and a number of different software programs. The past two semesters we have experienced a heavy increase in the demand for our related instructional services most pointedly from our teaching faculty.

On an individual appointment basis, several faculty members came into the Visual Resource Center at the Krieble Library for a series of lessons. We are set-up in the Visual Resources Center with digital cameras, scanners, and both PC & Macintosh computers for our faculty and students to utilize. They come in to learn the basics of uploading digital images from their cameras or scanner, saving the images to file, and cropping, rotating and enhancing their images in Photoshop. They also learn to use presentation software MS PowerPoint and about burning their finalized presentations to disc.

As an example, David Dewey signed up for instructional time with our Access Service Coordinator, Stephanie Johnson, in the VR Room for basic Photoshop & Powerpoint lessons. She reports that:

He wanted to use his camera to take digital images. Stephanie demonstrated to David how to create a folder on the PC desktop and save his images to that file from the flash card & instructed him in cropping, rotating and enhancing his photos in Photoshop. In Powerpoint, she showed David how to insert images, resize images to fit the slides, change backgrounds and rearrange the slide order. She demonstrated burning the Powerpoint presentation to CD. They did a test run of the presentation on a laptop hooked up to the LCD projector. Over the next several weeks, they would meet and go over the previous instruction – the presentations became more refined as David became more comfortable with the technology. David experimented on his own with his own PC using the Powerpoint tutorial she created to aid him in his self-learning."

Acquisitions and Cataloging Operations: Brief FY 2006-07

For budgetary reasons, we continue to keep our collection growth and cataloging operations at very modest levels.

FY06-07 Paid Acquisitions include: 32 books, 25 visual resources, 75 periodical subscriptions, & 6 database subscriptions. Additionally, we added Donations: 428 titles (catalogues or books) 4 visual resources (DVDs) and we created 49 DVDs.

Loan Services & Circulations for FY 2006-07

Between July 1, 2006 and June 30, 2007, the library circulated 8,401 items from our circulating collection. This is slight decrease from the circulation statistics of the previous year which reported 8,885 circulated

Overall 86% of the total annual circulations were items from our titles classed under the subject of art. The Top 3 circulation FY07 areas were in the following classifications:

Sculpture, class range 730-739 820 (9.7%)
Drawing, class range 740-749 1608 (19.1%)
Painting, class range 750-759 3511 (41.7%)

During FY 07

69% of the total circulations were to BFA students,
14% to Continuing Education Students and
12% to Studio & Liberal Arts Faculty

· Our Interlibrary lending, college staff and post-baccalaureate and trustee community made much less of a demand on circulation. Together they made up the remaining 5%.

On a related note, Interlibrary borrowing has continued with a healthy 89% fill rate. Interlibrary lending had a lower fill rate of 33.3%. Requests for materials from other libraries were very high this year. The students who were/are enrolled in the Art History minor were very much responsible for the increase in usage. The trend for materials requested was for in-depth academic materials regarding art subjects assigned in the art history classes. Items that were unfilled were generally hard-to-find titles that were not circulated by the lending libraries. In the case of article requests, some of the items were not to be loaned for free and the patron cancelled the request.

Donations Report FY 2006-07

The Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 acquisition cycle was a notable year due to the Gifts & Donations that we received to support the collections of the Krieble Library.

The Krieble Library accepts books and other materials as donations from individuals and organizations. When these materials match areas of research and instruction within the College, they are considered for cataloging into our collection. After donations are accepted, they are reviewed and the librarian makes the final decision on which materials are added to the collections. Those donations that are not added are still put to support the library by becoming part of our library surplus which is offered for sale at the annual Midsummer Festival Booksale. The revenue of the sales are then converted to funds to support the library's development.

During the Fall and Spring there were numerous donors that supported our library with donations of books and other resources. Alumni, faculty members and members of the general public donated many useful titles.

I am pleased to report Donations added include: 428 titles (catalogues or books) and 4 visual resources (DVDs). Also, several other donations remain in backlog and are still under consideration but have not formally been added to our collection.

This new resource is now available for use in the Krieble Library!

American Sculptors – 19^th & 20^th Century
Public Monuments in the Figurative Tradition

This collection of 19^th & 20^th century American Public Monuments in the Figurative Tradition is annotated with reference to sculptor, site, historical and architectural context; elements important to a full appreciation of public sculpture.

Fifty-nine significant public sculptures, by 23 sculptors, are represented in 279 multiple views.

This project was funded by Pfizer Research & Development, Pfizer Inc to commemorate Marcia H. Murphy’s thirty-six year career, and her direction of their fine arts exhibition program. In pursuing her passion for fine art, Marcia supported local non-profit art organizations, including the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, and directed the Pfizer gift to the Lyme Academy and its Krieble Library to reinforce the College’s continuing excellence and focus on a thorough grounding in traditional art discipline.

The sculptures were photographed and donated by Michael Richman, Ph.D., Washington, D.C., art historian and authority on Daniel Chester French. Booksale to Benefit Library

The Krieble Library will be offering its annual booksale.

As expected the books offered include many on Fine Arts, but we also include books on a wide range of other topics! We will offer a mix of art & art history, other scholarly works, popular fiction & reference books in our upcoming sale.

All proceeds will go directly towards helping support the Krieble Library! In years past the booksale proceeds have been directed to support the purchase of new resources--including numerous publications in print, film and digial formats. Every dollar is put to good use!

We are currently in the midst of preparing our surplus books for the annual booksale this summer.

You may come into the library for an advance look at our booksale items! When you purchase a booksale item you adopt a book & support our library at the same time.

On July 28th we will be having our booksale under the tent at the Midsumer Festival! The booksale starts at 9am and ends at 3pm.

As the Spring 2007 comes to a close this week our "Service Hours" at the Krieble Library change.

The last day of official class is today, Monday May 7th. Today, through Wednesday May 9, the library will offer service hours from 8am - 9:30pm. *Tuesday and Wednesday's hours are to provide extended service through the make-up classes that have been arranged with individual faculty.

Thursday and Friday we will provide day only service. The hours for each day will be as follows: May 10, 8am - 5pm & May 11, 8:30am-1pm and 2pm -5pm.

We will be closed all weekends starting May 12.

Additional Library Service Schedules for May are as follows:

May 14-23, 2007: Monday – Friday library service offered between 8:30am – 4:30pm
May 24-25 CLOSED for Staff Professional Activities.

Visiting Artist, Burt Silverman -- A Preview!

Burt Silverman, draftsman & painter, will be on the LACFA campus this month for a presentation to students and faculty in the Lecture Hall, on the 21st .

The library and student council have made arrangements for an advance film introduction to this artist and his work. Several films featuring Burt Silverman will be shown on campus between 9am - noon on the following days:

Job Functions/Tasks

The work is primarily clerical in nature and may involve computer data entry, image creation and editing , database searching, sorting of materials, repair and shelf-preparation of library or archive materials.

Helpful Skills/Abilities

Volunteers should be computer literate. A familiarity with Microsoft Office products, FileMaker Pro, or relational databases, and Photoshop software and the Internet are helpful.

Cezanne. West Long Branch, NJ : Kultur, 2000. Paul Cezanne sought a method of capturing the underlying structure of any subject matter, in landscape, in still-life, and in portraiture. His eventual triumph derived from a revolutionary new approach to color and to perspective. His paintings were often derided by the critics, but by the end of his life, his fenius was beginning to be appreciated. Cezanne's influence on 20th century artists was so great that he is now referred to as the "Father of Modern Painting."

THE LECTURE SERIES: Realizing that the Hale lectures ought to be preserved for posterity, in 1976, before he retired, Mr. Hale's entire Monday night series of lectures was videotaped in black and white in the order that he delivered them at the Art Student's League of New York. Future generations of artists and students will be able to benefit from the vast knowledge and penetrating insights of these famous lectures, with all the warmth and wit that makes them such a memorable experience. Throughout the lectures, you see Mr. Hale demonstrating to his students the basic structure, proportions, anatomical details, function and renderings of the human figure, by way of the human skeleton and by his skillful step by step drawings.

Additionally, we have the full series of DVDs from Glenn Vilppu's anatomy course and figure drawing manual on order.

We are deeply appreciative of this gift and are very please to announce this special acquisition!

How to find materials when our OPAC is down

Please use staff to assist you in locating materials in our library this afternoon.

We will be conducting some system maintenance on our library catalog today, Tuesday Nov. 7^th between the hours of 1-3pm.

During that time our library catalog (a.k.a. OPAC) will be unavailable.

Never fear, when the system is down, our staff on duty is always a good back-up to aid you in determining what resources might answer your questions and satisty your research needs. Indeed, we are always happy to assist patrons in locating books and visual resources and especially while our catalog is down!

Please, note, all other online resources, Internet and databases, will be available throughout the day. Any questions please ask staff at the Library during business hours!

Real-time, web-based reference service

Now our campus has access to a online reference service! InfoAnytime - the statewide virtual reference project coordinated by the Connecticut Library Consortium (CLC) a statewide membership collaborative serving all types of Connecticut libraries has come to the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts library.

InfoAnyTime is a real-time, web-based reference service that provides live librarians to assist students, faculty and the public in finding information to support their research. It allows students and patrons to connect to a professional librarian 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sessions are conducted via online chat, using pushing and co-browsing technology to display information found on the web and in the iCONN databases. Currently the Microsoft IE or Firefox browsers are recommended. Basically anyone with a web browser can access the service - without extra add-on software.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Users of the service click on the InfoAnyTime link on their library's web site, enter their name and email address (optional), and wait a few moments for a librarian to come online.

Professional, highly-trained librarians conduct reference interviews via online chat, and provide answers and further resources in the form of web sites and online database citations. These online resources appear directly on the user's screen, next to the chat session window. The user may interact both with the web sites provided and with the librarian until his/her question has been answered satisfactorily.

At the end of each session, both the participant and the reference librarians at the college receive transcripts of the session via email.

All LACFA students, staff and faculty are welcome to bring their questions about this new service to the staff at our campus library.

Halloween Film Viewing

Today's Film: Munch. West Long Branch, NJ : Kultur, 2000. In 1893, a Norwegian artist created a masterpiece which became a definihs image of the 20th century: "The Scream". All his life, Edvard Munch suffered the consequences of a childhood surrounded by maddness and death. By middle-age his own being broke down completely. His pictures, by then, had gained him fame across Europe. As a young man he left Norway to live the Bohemian life.

Hands-on Class with Wireless

Let me share some good news!

Last Thursday I conducted our first in-classroom hands-on library instruction class!

I made use of our 3 wireless Mac laptops (and borrowed another), to provide Brian C’s class of 15, four group workstations.

The session was to introduce the class to our new infoAnytime service and database searching.

The students were able to share the workstations and actively experience using library resources. This is a major step forward from our more passive look-view demonstrations of the past. I look forward to continuing our development of library classes in this same hands-on mode!

I am thankful for the generosity of the Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation and other private benefactors for their support which has enabled us to bring as needed wireless and Mac laptops to this campus.

I look forward to advancing our development of our classroom instruction resources and the future establishment of permanent wireless access across campus.

My experience yesterday was inspiring! Inital feedback from the students and instructor was that the hands-on mode is far better!

Library Methods and Materials 101

Experiences the first year on campus vary for each student. The Library Methods and Materials Seminar is designed to help introduce the library and encourage the use of it and its resources. This seminar is formally offered to all first year students as an opportunity to start learning about what is avaialble and to encourage the understanding of what research provides and how to do it well.

Fall 2006's Library Methods and Materials Seminar was offered on September 14, 2006

Students attending where asked to consider the library in respect to how it relates to their work in the studios and classrooms. That when using the library their work would be similar to the work in the studios in that there are methods and materials to learn for the library. Also that their library research could follow similar and creative paths, that what they discovered in the library could play and interactive role in their class and studio assignments.

The lesson objectives that day were for each student to start to understand:

the layout of the library and basic locations of resources
their responsibilities as students using the library AND finally …
to come away with the idea that the library will play both a creative and educational role in their time as a student at our college.

Further students were asked to engage in exploring the library. Lesson handouts were provided. For copies please stop by my office.
